Basic Car Repairs Everyone Should Know

Owning our own cars is a dream that most of us have had since we could walk. We are well aware of the benefits that a vehicle of our own can offer. We also know that to keep a car in good running condition, we need to have some basic knowledge of car repairs. The more we drive, the more probable we will have to deal with a breakdown.

If you keep up with the basic maintenance requirements, you are much less likely to find yourself stranded on the side of the road.   1. Changing a flat tire: One common occurrence that can happen to you while you are out driving is a flat tire. It may sound simple, and most of the time, it is. Unfortunately, it is something that many people cannot manage to do without calling a tow truck or roadside assistance. Yes, it is great to have someone else do the hard work for you. If you are in an area where you have cell phone service, feel free to go ahead and call for help. You may find yourself with a flat tire off the beaten path, so take the time to learn how to change it on your vehicle. It may be a little different in each car you drive, but you can figure out all the others without much trouble once you know the basics.
  2. Changing a car battery: When the cold weather hits, you do not want to be stuck along the side of the road. This is where you may end up if your battery or cables are not functioning correctly. It is simple to change the battery, and it should be one of those skills that you learn. Remember that the white powder on the battery terminals and wires is acid. It will eat through your good clothes, and it can damage the paint on your vehicle. Use gloves and eye protection when messing with the battery, and make sure that you clean off all the acid before trying to remove it. Also, always be sure that the positive cable goes on the positive post and the negative on the negative post when you install the new one. Replacing Lights and Wipers: Another common task that you need to learn how to do to your vehicle is changing the headlights, taillights, blinkers, running lights, and of course, your windshield wipers. There is obviously more to it than these three things, but they are some of the most common problems that can happen while you are out driving. Other mechanical work you really should take to a shop that can do it correctly the first time. 

The cost of having professional repairs pays for itself when you figure out how much time and money it would take you to try and repair your own vehicle. If you have good mechanical knowledge, then go for it. Otherwise, play it safe and use a mechanic that can get the job done.
